BASILICA DEL VIGNETO
WINERY CONCEPT
Maintain an architecture that is contemporary, but integrated with respect for the place, to give life to to a continuity in his historical, evocative, monumental, rural and at the same time spiritual quotations through the cult and centuries-old ritual of oil, wine, grape harvest, and their sacred clothes.
DISCOVER THE PROJECT
CONCEPT
The area affected by the complex of environmental improvement interventions is located on a hilly promontory
surrounded to the east and south by the Orcia River and constitutes an offshoot of the hills surrounding the center of Castelnuovo dell’Abate.
This territory is mainly cultivated with olive groves and vineyards mixed with large arable land on the plains and hills covered with woods. The territory of the Val d’Orcia is a unique expression of the landscape qualities that, in the collective imagination, lead back to the Tuscan countryside.

The new concept of the company center was born with the assumptions of achieving the best possible landscape insertion,
The design solution provides that the retaining walls necessary for the excavation along the slope in which the underground volume is inserted are transformed into an iconic architectural work without environmental impact. In addition, an important recovery of the rural areas of the complex through a series of works intended for the environmental improvement of the area and the restoration of the traditional landscape.

MASTERPLAN

The usability of the area and the routes will be increased by improving the conditions of practicability of the “agricultural viability” while maintaining the traditional characteristics.
It is also planned to recover and create new paths which, starting from the Castle, will allow you to reach the cultivated areas through the tree-lined slopes of the promontory of the Castle,
providing places to stop for contemplating the extraordinary landscape of the Val d’Orcia and tasting the products directly produced by the land traveled.
It is also planned to recover a pedestrian path that retraces the ridge path that was originally traveled by wayfarers who headed from Castelnuovo Abate to Monte Amiata.

All the interventions to arrange the routes will take place with simple solutions and through naturalistic engineering without any modification of the morphology of the slopes.
PROSPECT
The chosen architectural solution tends to reinterpret the traditional characteristics of the historical emergencies of the territory.
Extensive use of sandstone will be planned for the facades in continuity with the predominant material of the resort’s accommodation facility and other historic buildings in the area.
To give a more decisive character to the main entrance, it was decided to create an ogival bronzed metal portal in homage to the artistic tradition of churches and abbeys.
The choice of these materials contributes to a coherent integration into the landscape context which, by design choice, wants to fit into the context without profoundly
transforming it by reading its traditional characteristics by re-proposing them with a simplicity of form and materials.

ELEVATION AND SECTION
The arrangement of the new intervention on two mainly underground floors provides for a preliminary internal distribution and a lower space intended for the processing and aging of products and an upper floor intended for offices and direct use by customers.
The design solution involves the construction of two driveway ramps that allow you to go down to the lower level with work vehicles without interfering with users.
This choice has the advantage of limiting to the view from the outside the vehicles that, otherwise, would have occupied spaces and volumes above ground.

The environmental elevation clearly shows the dimensional relationship that exists between the Castle and the new company center. It is also evident that the distance and
difference in height between the Castle and the new company center does not determine any perceptual interference with the historical heritage.
From studies conducted specifically for the present design, it appears that the west side is the least intervisible from the main places of crossing the territory and therefore more
suitable for any transformations.
In the immediate vicinity of the new company center, the landscape and all the slope or outdoor spaces will not be altered which will take place through the use of traditional materials.
